Reflecting our commitment to developing the next generation of musicians and music supporters, Solomon Steelpan Company has launched a music training program for young steelband players.  The Steel Impressions Youth Ensemble offers world-class training and performance opportunities for students of all ability levels.

The breadth of opportunities and training offered by the Steel Impressions shows our dedication to providing the best and most well - rounded conservatory-style training that encompasses both large and small ensemble experience.

OPPORTUNITIES

o   Public performance in SI Youth Ensemble Concerts

o   Development of basic technical skills and music fundamentals such as melody, harmony, rhythm, structure and styles

o   Professional coaching sessions with professional steelband players

o  Performance opportunities for local and regional events such as summer festivals and other community events

The concert season regularly consists of summer performances, a series of four concerts (Fall, Winter, Spring and Fall) and additional performances and community and cultural events throughout the year.

ELIGIBILITY

Membership in Steel Impressions Youth Ensemble is open to young musicians ages 14 – 21. Membership in Steel Impressions Youth Ensemble is by audition only. Participation in your school steelband program is a prerequisite to acceptance into the Steel Impressions Youth Ensemble program.

TUITION AND FEES

There is an annual tuition of $200.00 associated with being a member of the Steel Impressions Youth Ensemble.  Tuition fees cover maintenance of instruments, purchasing music, professional coaching and other Steel Impressions related costs. Financial aid is available for students who demonstrate financial need.

REQUIREMENTS

1.     Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory. 

2.     Concerts and Dress Rehearsals are mandatory, no absences are excused. There are several performances and rehearsals during the summer season. Rehearsals are weekly between September - May.

3.     A maximum of four (4) excused absences are allowed provided written notice is received in advance from a parent or school steelband teacher (i.e. sickness, family emergency, school steelband engagements).

4.     More than two (2) unexcused absences can result in dismissal.

AUDITIONS

Auditions will be held at Solomon Steelpan Company on Monday June 23 from 9:00 – 3:00 pm.  Lunch will be served.  The required excerpts for audition will be mailed to you upon receipt of your completed application.  Interested students should complete the attached interest form.

ABOUT STEEL IMPRESSIONS
Steel Impressions, now in its 25th year, is a performance ensemble under the direction of world-renowned steelpan builder and player Phil Solomon. For over twenty years, the ensemble has conducted residencies, workshops and performances at schools, community and cultural organizations in Pennsylvania and across the country, including Indianapolis Children’s Museum (the largest in the world) and the museum of Natural History in New York City.
